Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
At the College of Biblical Studies, we aim to teach Truth, that will not only train students for their futures, but will also transform their lives! Martin Luther King, Jr. is an example of a transformational leader. Today, as we celebrate his life, take time to reflect on why we celebrate this day- why our whole country celebrates this day! Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of only three people in the United States who is celebrated by a national holiday (the others are Columbus and Washington). After an attempted assassination by a deranged black woman in 1958, King issued the statement below and also reaffirmed his belief in the power and effectiveness of non-violence. “I felt no ill will toward Mrs. Izola Currey [sic] and know that thoughtful people will do...
It’s that time of year…
At this time of year, it is popular in our culture to encourage people to make a New Year’s resolution. The New Year is a time of hope for change. Of course, the diet industry and the fitness industry love this because it means a host of new people will be signing up to implement their next change. The Bible points to mankind as being created in the image of God but tainted by sin in such a way that man is ultimately morally depraved and bankrupt without God’s assistance. So every year, people resolve to try to change their fleshly nature by resolving to exercise more or eat better. According to a 2005 survey by Kraft and the South Beach diet, the average dieting resolution lasts 33...

Costumes and Candy vs The 95 Theses
On our Facebook page last week, I asked this question: What do YOU think of when you think of October 31st? What is the first thing that comes to mind and what is the significance of that day for you? How do you celebrate/participate in or not, etc. October 31st? I recieved a small range of comments. Someone commented that they chose not to celebrate Halloween. Someone else commented that Halloween is when their family decorates for Christmas (what a planner!) One woman commented that she enjoys it as a fun holiday, and makes sure to pray for protection from evil. People have different views on Halloween- but October 31st has another significance: Reformation Day! Reformation Day is a day to remember when Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses on the door of the...
A Religious Movement
What is Reformation Day? Growing up, I knew that October 31st was a day when I would dress up as something awesomely ridiculous and get to eat significantly more candy than my parents would normally allow. I had no idea what Halloween really represented or the history of its conception. I especially had no idea of the other significance that October 31st holds for us as Christians. October 31st is Reformation Day, a day commemorating the day that Martin Luther posted The 95 Theses on the door of a Catholic Church in Germany in 1517. Do you know the significance of The 95 Theses? Leave me your comments on our Facebook Page and they might be included in next week’s...
