Helpful Hints
- Plan to show up with questions already in mind that you would like tutoring assistance with. The tutors are there to assist and encourage you and they can do that better if you have already done some of the work and can identify your areas of struggle.
- Start your work before you arrive (if you are able) so that you are familiar with the topic and assignments
- Bring old assignments with you to your first session so that the tutor can get a feel for your writing style, or where you may need assistance.
- Are there certain courses I must take on the front end of my enrollment in the college? Yes. If you were admitted to the college for the fall 2010 semester or after, then you are required to complete English Composition 1, English Composition 2, and Basic Computer Science within your first three semesters of enrollment at the college, unless you have already completed them at another institution and they are being transferred in as credit.
- What courses am I required to take for my degree? See the "Know Your Program" section for required courses in each program. If you were admitted in a previous semester, make sure to refer to the catalog for the semester in which you entered the program for your degree requirements.
- How many Christian Service Learning Units (CSLP) do I have to take? Every student admitted into a degree program (Associates or higher) during the fall 2010 semester of after, is required to complete a total of 3 Christian Service Units. If you were admitted into a program prior to fall 2010, you may have more or less than 3. Please consult with your Enrollment Advisor for your specific requirements. Visit www.cbshouston.edu/csp for more details about what the CSLP is all about.
- Once I have declared a program, can I change my program? Yes. You will need to complete a Declaration of Major Change Form. It is important to note that when you change programs, you come under the current requirements of the program you are switching into, and not all of your courses may transfer over. Consult with your Enrollment Advisor before you make the change.
- Can I get help picking out my courses each semester? YES! We encourage you to either make an appointment with your Enrollment Advisor, or contact them to discuss via phone or email, soon after the schedule for each semester comes out so that you can make a plan in time for registration. We will send out communications once the schedule comes out encouraging continuing students to come in certain weeks prior to registration so that we can better serve you before the traffic with new students gets to busy. Plan to get your advising done early each semester.
- If my assigned advisor is not available, can I meet with the other advisors? Yes. All of the Enrollment Advisors have access to the same information and can help you if your assigned advisor is not available. In all cases it is always best to set an appointment and to let us know what you want to discuss in that appointment so we can better prepare for you.
- Can I take a semester off without penalty? If you are in the Accelerated Program, you will have to apply for a Leave of Absence in order to stop attending a semester. Consult with your Enrollment Advisor before taking this step.
If you are in any other program you may take a semester off with no penalty. In fact, you can take two consecutive semesters off with no penalty. However, if you are not enrolled in three consecutive semesters, you will be withdrawn from the college and your program, and readmission will be required upon your return. NOTE: if you have to be readmitted your degree requirements may change.
- Are all of the classes offered in the same format? No. While most courses meet once a week for 3 hours either in the morning or evening, over the course of 14 weeks, some classes are offered over the course of 10 weeks and meet once a week for 4 hours, and some courses are offered over the course of one week, meeting for 8 hours a day, and still others are offered over the course of 4 or 5 weekends. Check the course schedule each semester to determine the format of each course for that semester.
- How long will it take me to complete my degree? Every student's circumstances are different, and every student's course load capacity is different. Most students at the college work full-time and also have family and church responsibilities on top of school, so the average student at CBS takes two classes (usually 6 credit hours) per semester. At this rate (and assuming that no other college courses are being transferred in) a student in the Associates program who takes classes in the fall, spring, and summer, can complete the Associates degree in about 4 years. The total time decreases the greater the course load each semester. The average student in the traditional Bachelor programs taking an average of 2 courses (usually 6 hours), and taking classes fall, spring, and summer, can complete the Bachelor degree in just over 7 years. Again, the total time decreases depending on how many courses are transferred in from other colleges and with a greater course load each semester.
- How many courses should I take in a semester? The average student at CBS works full-time and also has family and church responsibilities on top of school. We encourage you to talk with other students who are in similar situations, as well as your Enrollment Advisor for individual advice. For those students who are not working full-time, or don't have church and/or family responsibilities, a greater course load is more manageable. Whatever your situation, we encourage you to take a course load that allows you to not neglect your family, and to not neglect your work and other responsibilities. Some changes in priorities may be required for a season, so that you can be equipped for ministry. Seek counsel and pray.
- How long do I have to complete my program at the college? You have a total of 8 years to complete a program at CBS.
- I am getting close to graduating, what should I do? Complete an "Intent to Graduate" Form for your program and submit it to the Office of the Registrar by the published due date. See www.cbshouston.edu/forms for the "Intent to Graduate" Form and due dates. Once the form is submitted, the Office of the Registrar will conduct a final degree audit to confirm whether you meet the graduation requirements or not. There is a $60 graduation fee that will need to be paid with the submission of the form.
- How can I get a copy of my grades? The Enrollment Advisors cannot provide you with a copy of your grades, however you can login to your student account at myrecords.cbshouston.edu [link this] and print off an unofficial copy of your grades. If you need an official transcript you can request that from the Office of the Registrar.
- Can I complete some of my course requirements at another college once I have become a student at CBS? Yes. You can complete any of the general education requirements at other colleges and institutions and transfer the credit in to CBS. Any course that is to be considered for transfer credit must be taken at an accredited college/university, and you must earn a grade of at least C in order for the course to transfer into CBS for credit. Contact your Enrollment Advisor prior to registering for the course you hope to transfer in, so that you can verify that the course will meet the transfer requirements.
- How can I see my GPA? Login to your student account at myrecord.cbshouston.edu and you can see your current GPA, as well as your academic history or all courses taken and transferred in to the college.
- What about scholarships and financial aid? Go to www.cbshouston.edu/financial-aid for information on the financial aid application process and available financial aid.
- What services are available for students with disabilities? The College of Biblical Studies provides an accessible and supportive environment, with special and reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. Questions, concerns, and declarations should be directed to the Office of the Dean of Students. For more information see page 11 of the Student Life section of the Academic Catalog
- I am considering dropping a class. What should I do? You may drop at any point through the tenth week of classes (Consult the Academic Calendar for specific drop deadlines). See the Dropping a Class section on our Registrar's site. If you are thinking about dropping a class, you should talk with the Student Financial Services department first, so that you are clear on any financial ramifications dropping a course may have. If you decided you still want to drop a class, you will need to complete the v and submit the form to the Office of the Registrar.
